Growth and Fixed Mindset

Welcome to our Growth Mindset page.  The term 'growth mindset' refers to a way of thinking, learning and taking on new challenges.  A person with a growth mindset is open to constructive criticism, takes feedback and uses it, takes on new challenges, pushes themselves outside of their comfort zone and shows resilience and perseverance.

Studies show that people with a growth mindset go on to achieve great things in life, they are successful in all they do and are happy - which is exactly what we want for all of our children.  Most of our children would say that they have a growth mindset, but in truth there are more children who have a fixed mindset.  Some more-able children feel that they have a growth mindset but fear failure, do not like to admit when they have made a mistake and are reluctant to ask for help.

Growth Mindset at St Joseph's!

Our children have recently been introduced to the idea of Growth and Fixed Mindset - teachers promote a growth mindset attitude when teaching new concepts and encourage children to push beyond their perceived limits and challenge themselves.  Pupils have had assemblies about some famous people who have succeeded due to having a growth mindset and not ever giving up on their goals and ambitions.

Some key aspects of Growth Mindset

  • We remember it is always OK to make mistakes - we learn from them
  • We never give up!  We try a different approach, or use a different strategy
  • We learn from each other - you guys often make the best teachers!
  • We don't compare ourselves with others, but we do learn from others
  • We challenge ourselves - which really helps us make good progress
  • We take risks - we don't limit ourselves by taking the easy option
  • We join in as much as possible - and we learn by being involved
  • We remember that mastering something new feels so much better than doing something that you can already do
  • We remember that the brain is making new connections all of the time - the only thing you need to know is that you can learn anything!!!
