Physical Education

Intent

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we recognise the vital role Physical Education plays in developing healthy lifestyles, lifelong fitness habits, and positive well-being.
Our intent is to provide all children with high-quality PE and sport provision through the Real PE scheme of learning, ensuring that every pupil can succeed, enjoy physical activity, and develop a love of movement.

We aim for our pupils to:

  • Be active, confident, and motivated learners who understand the importance of physical health and fitness.

  • Experience a broad and balanced curriculum that is inclusive, engaging, and challenging for all, including those with additional needs.

  • Develop key personal and social values such as resilience, teamwork, determination, and respect.

  • Access opportunities for competition, leadership, and celebration of sporting success.

Through a carefully planned and sequenced curriculum, we want all pupils to appreciate the joy and benefits of being physically active—both in school and beyond.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum follows the Real PE programme, providing a progressive, skills-based approach that builds pupils’ physical literacy, confidence, and social and emotional development. Lessons are designed to develop fundamental movement skills, creativity, and self-assessment, allowing every child to achieve success at their own level.

Key features of our implementation include:

  • Consistent lesson structure through the Real PE scheme, ensuring progression of physical, personal, and cognitive skills from EYFS to Year 6.

  • Development of robust Assessment for learning using Real PE’s assessment tools, supporting staff to monitor pupil progress and plan next steps.

  • Regular learning walks and staff voice reviews to ensure consistency and confidence in PE delivery.

  • Year 5 Sports Leaders (trained annually) who support lunchtime activities, inter-class competitions, and Sports Day, developing leadership and responsibility.

  • Broader experiences through enrichment activities such as boxing, archery, cycling, and sensory circuits—guided by pupil voice and inclusive of all learners.

  • Competitive opportunities through intra- and inter-school competitions using MOKI fitness data to track and celebrate participation.

  • Targeted interventions in collaboration with the SENDCo to ensure accessibility and engagement for all pupils.

  • Professional development for staff through internal and external CPD sessions, increasing confidence and expertise in delivering PE.

  • Working with School Games to achieve a Gold Games Mark Award

Our PE curriculum is further enriched by after-school clubs, local partnerships, and whole-school celebrations, ensuring physical education has a strong and visible presence across the school community.

Impact

At St Joseph’s, the impact of our PE provision is seen in pupils who are:

  • Active, healthy, and motivated, demonstrating an enjoyment of physical activity and understanding how to lead active lifestyles.

  • Competent and confident in a wide range of fundamental skills that enable them to participate successfully in different sports and activities.

  • Engaged and resilient learners, showing self-belief, cooperation, and perseverance.

  • Inclusive and supportive, celebrating each other’s achievements and demonstrating respect through sport.

  • Proud of their achievements, both personal and team-based, with regular celebration in assemblies, displays, and school events.

Progress is monitored through Real PE assessments, pupil and staff voice, MOKI participation data, and celebration of competition outcomes. Governors receive regular reports evidencing improvements in participation, skill development, and staff confidence.

Ultimately, our pupils leave St Joseph’s with a strong foundation for lifelong physical activity, a positive mindset towards sport, and the character and confidence to succeed beyond primary school.
