Fatima Class - Year 1 and 2
Welcome to Fatima Class – Years 1 and 2
At St Joseph’s, our KS1 children work hard on our bespoke EVOLVE curriculum. Each term, literacy, reading, and foundation subjects are rooted in answering a term focus question:
-
Term 1: Who am I?
-
Term 2: Who am I in place and time?
-
Term 3: How does the world work?
-
Term 4: How do we organise ourselves?
-
Term 5: How do we express ourselves?
-
Term 6: How do we make the world a better place?
We explore these questions and topics through a variety of ways, including stories, trips, play-based learning, investigations, forest school, research, and much more. For example, this year, we have learnt about other faiths through forest school activities, explored our local area on a walk into town, learnt about leadership through a visit to the town hall to meet the mayor.
In the past, we have enjoyed trips to Cogges Farm, The Transport Museum, Oxford Science Museum, The Library, Town Hall, a local bakery. Coming up, we are excited about a trip to Cotswold Wildlife Park!
Homework – we encourage reading as often as possible; children have a reading record you can make notes in. All KS1 children have a login for NUMBOTS for optional maths games. Each week, children will receive a list of 10 spellings to learn for a test on Tuesday's as well as an additional phonics/SPaG task. Each term there is an RE homework project. See an example of a term homework letter below.
Our School Mission in Action
So far in KS1, we have done lots of work on caring for God’s gifts, including litter picking, labelling school bins to help others recycle correctly, and building a prayer garden with fruits and vegetables. Our children are also committed to caring for the less fortunate. Inspired by Christ, our Year 1s and 2s have raised money for CAFOD through a class fundraiser planned by themselves and led many food collection initiatives. They have written to local shops, supermarkets, and parents requesting donations, and personally delivered these contributions to the local foodbank, learning firsthand how they are used to help those in need.
See our attached, medium term plans, long term plan, example timetable, photo gallery and homework letters to see how we fit it all in!
